Quirks: Deception in Romance

We all have our personal quirks – things that just light our fire or work our nerves like nails on chalkboard…

Hey, we’re all human.

I try to be as honest as I can (with myself and those very few people who read my reviews) about how I feel about the books I read. I really try to take as much time as I can to discover what it is I like or dislike about any particular book. Being honest with myself requires me to own up to some of my personal quirks.

So today I want to talk about my issue(s) with deception.

Quirks…

So, I was recently approved at NetGally to read book 2 in the Science of Temptation series by Delphine Dryden, The Seduction Hypothesis.

Ok.

So, I pretty much love Delphine Dryden’s work. I’m enjoying The Seduction Hypothesis. And I devoured book 1 in the series, The Theory of Attraction.

But…Quirks.

I have this thing about awkward and/or embarrassing moments. I can’t help it. It’s my personal quirk. When I’m reading (an admitted fictional character(s)) get into an awkward or embarrassing moment…it makes me feel all jittery inside. I get tense and I put the book down. I know!!! It’s crazy, right? But that’s me.

Want to know what’s worse? I can’t do it with TV, either. I’ll leave the room. It drives my husband crazy, lol! He’s always astounded that I just.can’t.do.it. I feel embarrassed for the [admittedly] fictional character(s). I guess you can tell we don’t watch a lot of sitcoms together, lol! I get all squirmy.

Back to The Seduction Hypothesis.

I’m reading along and WHAM! embarrassing moment that makes the heroine squirm. Damn. Now I’m squirming. Uncomfortable. I put the book down…and I’ve been giving myself pep-talks ever since. “You can do this. You just have to get past that moment. It’s only one moment in an entire book. Come on, you can DO THIS.”

So…I pick the book up…re-read the beginning of the embarrassing moment…read 1-2 more sentences…and I put it down again.

Damn it! Why isn’t it possible to read with your hands over your eyes??????!
