Review: The Heat is On (Out of Uniform #6) by Elle Kennedy

The Heat is On

As a Navy SEAL, Matt O’Connor specializes in Bad Boy. At least, that’s what he thinks…until he finds himself face down on the floor during a bank robbery, arguing with a sexy, bad-girl blonde who wields her sharp tongue with surgical precision.

Just like that, Matt begins to wonder if maybe the idea of settling down with one woman isn’t as crazy as he thought.

Savannah Harte is addicted to first kisses and whirlwind romances. Once the thrill is gone, though, she’s outta there. She’s eager to follow the adrenaline rush she feels with Matt into the nearest bed, but when tangled sheets begin to feel like tangled heartstrings, her first instinct is to cut him loose. There’s only one problem: Matt’s not going anywhere. And not even a steamy threesome seems to dull her growing feelings.

Which leaves Savannah having to decide what she wants more. The casual thrill of now…or the scary thrill of forever.

Product Warnings: This title features a hot threesome with explicit sex, a bad-girl heroine, and two Navy SEALs guaranteed to make you sweat.

Meh.

There was a lot to like about The Heat is On…but there was also a lot I didn’t like. And frankly, I’m going to chalk part of it up as a learning experience.

The Heat is On is one of those rare romance books where gender roles are slightly reversed. Savannah, the heroine, doesn’t like relationships – her drug of choice are relationship firsts: first kisses, first dates, first fucks, etc. As soon as a guy Savannah is dating starts getting serious, she starts packing her bags. This works for her until she meets the hero, Matt.

Review: Tempting Tamera (Circle of Three #1) by Brynn Paulin

Tempting Tamera

Photobucket
A new job, a new home, a new lifestyle… When teacher Tamera moved to Cranston to teach, she knew the lifestyle she’d encounter would take some getting used to. Though she was raised in an open-minded household she doesn’t have experience with menage relationships therefore her attraction to her fellow teachers, Kai and Brian, takes her by surprise.

When the trio is stranded together during a freak snowstorm, Tamera discovers her attraction isn’t one sided. In fact, the men have been waiting for the opportunity to show her how perfect three can be.

Tempting Tamara is the fourth book I’ve read using the Scribd service and the first book in the Circle of Three series. This book is currently on sale at Kobo for $2.50. I located this book using Scribd’s search but I was doing a specific search for Brynn Paulin at the time. The book I was looking for is not available on Scribd.

So. This book. I was looking for something else by this author and settled on this book instead.

Tempting Tamera is short. Very short. And like most shorts – there are serious pacing issues due to the shortness of the story.

Short stories are really hard to write – the format is pretty unforgiving. I also tend to “grade” shorts harder than full length novels simply because the flaws are glaring in a short that would get glossed over in a full length.

So. Tempting Tamera. Uuuugh. The dialogue is quite often painful! And the plot is…hard to digest in such a short period of time. The story starts with the heroine and hero(es) having known each other for about…3 months or so. Even knowing that – the quick jump from making eyes at someone to being “in love” happened waaaaaay to fast for me. I was rolling my eyes most of the read.

Another issue I had was the introduction and plotline of the heroine’s….pre-arranged boyfriend? Not quite sure what to call him, to be honest. The whole situation was BS and caused additional eye rolling. Don’t get me wrong, I love a little menage and the plot (except Andy) all probably would work better in a longer format. The longer format just gives more time for character and plot building.

At the end of the day, this was an easy way to burn through 20 minutes or so.

Mastered Anthology Review: Juicy (Twilight Teahouse #1) by T.J. Michaels

Mastered: 10 Tales of Sensual Surrender

Twilight Teahouse ~ Choose something decadent from our menu…

Solie Shaw is a brilliant self-made woman. After managing a corporation by day, at night, all she wants is to not be in charge. The last man she’d gifted her heart to had smashed it to smithereens and then did the mambo on top of the pieces. Now, along comes the chance to get exactly what she needs. All Solie has to do…is choose.

This was a really cute story that I sorta enjoyed. I say “sorta” because too much of the story was taken up by the mental angst of the heroine, Solie, and her issues with her horrible ex. Time and time again – no matter what was happening – the ex-bf would pop up in Solie’s head and she’d do the “woe is me” dance of angst. It got old pretty fast – even though I realize that she only broke up with the ex-bf six weeks ago.juicy

Review: Tempting Her Best Friend by Gina L. Maxwell

Tempting Her Best Friend

Photobucket
A satisfying contemporary romance from Entangled’s Lovestruck imprint…

Alyssa Miller is tired of waiting for her next-door neighbor to see her as more than just his best friend. Ready to let off some steam, she heads to Las Vegas for a romance book convention where, if she’s lucky, she’ll get down and dirty with one of the sexy cover models.

Dillon Alexander doesn’t do commitment—especially not where his best friend is concerned. She deserves a man who can give her the world, not damaged goods. But when he realizes Alyssa intends to have a one-night stand on her vacation, he hauls ass after her to make sure he’s the one to scratch her itch.

Neither of them expects their explosive chemistry to burn hotter than the lights on the strip, but with a little help from Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, a flamboyant matchmaker, and TSA, what happens in Vegas might not stay in Vegas…

I have to admit to a bias – I have a thing for “friends to lovers” romances…and I married my best friend, too. 😉 So this book is right up my alley!

This was a really cute story! I like both Alyssa and Dillon quite a bit – and both of them came across as well thought out characters. There’s not a lot of additional depth to this story – it’s all laid out for you in both the title and the blurb – but it’s a lot of fun and I really enjoyed watching Alyssa and Dillon pair up.

I enjoyed watching Dillon and Alyssa find their way to each other BUT…I have this thing against pining. Alyssa pined for Dillon in silence much too long (in my opinion) so the opening chapter was a small struggle for me. Dillon – while adorable – was a bit of the stereotypical romance hero: he’s unwilling to try to love because being a player is just in his blood. O_O Ooooookay. It was quite ridiculous – for me – for both of them to have such strong feelings but never even hinted it to each other.

But anyway.

It’s a quick and fun ride, that’s for sure. Sadly, we don’t get to spend a lot of time at the romance conference – most of the action takes place in the hotel room as the couple are screwing each others’ brains out. Which was hot, BTW. I also enjoyed the character Trent and the entire ending starting with Trent running into Alyssa. It was just a little strange, just a little unbelievable and a lot of fun.

What I did NOT enjoy was the entire scene directly prior to Alyssa meeting up with Trent at the end. Alyssa and Dillon’s actions and reactions…didn’t quite strike true in the face of their relationship. The epilogue was adorable as well. It also fit a lot better than the Big Mis.

So…it’s cute, it’s fun and it’s the friends to lovers trope. It’s only $0.99 so…recommended if you like that trope!

Review: Love Irresistibly (FBI/US Attorney #4) by Julie James

HE’S USED TO GETTING WHAT HE WANTS…

A former football star and one of Chicago’s top prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cade Morgan will do anything to nail a corrupt state senator, which means he needs Brooke Parker’s help. As general counsel for a restaurant company, she can get a bug to the senator’s table at one of her five-star restaurants so the FBI can eavesdrop on him. All Cade has to do is convince Brooke to cooperate—and he’s not afraid to use a little charm, or the power of his office, to do just that.

AND WHAT HE WANTS IS HER.

A savvy businesswoman, Brooke knows she needs to play ball with the U.S. Attorney’s office—even if it means working with Cade. No doubt there’s a sizzling attraction beneath all their sarcastic quips, but Brooke is determined to keep things casual. Cade agrees—until a surprising turn of events throws his life into turmoil, and he realizes that he wants more than just a good time from the one woman with whom he could fall terrifyingly, irresistibly in love . . .

The final read in my Julie James glomming.

So. Now that I have read all the books in the FBI/US Attorney series, I can say that I found this book to be…one of the more boring of the group. It’s not really memorable so I had to go read the blurb to remind myself of who, what, when, where and how. O_o

And the biggest transgression? Plot Moppet! Accck! James gave me a plot moppet in the middle of a contemporary romance series that stars career singles with no children. Along with a “forgive family anything” ending. I almost threw up in my mouth. O_O

Review: It Happened One Wedding by Julie James (FBI/US Attorney #5)

SHE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO SAY “I DO”

After a humiliating end to her engagement, investment banker Sidney Sinclair is done with commitment-phobic men. But when her sister winds up engaged after a whirlwind courtship, she’s thrown in to close contact with exactly the kind of sexy playboy she wants to avoid—the gorgeous best man. She’s stuck with him, for better or worse, until her sister walks down the aisle, but that doesn’t mean she has to give in to his smooth advances, no matter how tempting they are…

BUT HE MAKES IT HARD TO SAY “I DON’T”

Special Agent Vaughn Roberts always gets his man on the job and his woman in bed. So Sidney’s refusal to fall for his charms only makes him more determined to win over the cool and confident redhead. Only what starts out as a battle of wills ends up as a serious play for her heart. Because the one woman who refuses to be caught may be the only one Vaughn can’t live without…

I decided I wanted to read this book after it received a Recommended Read tag by Dear Author. Once I made that decision, this book and I did a little dance for some weeks. Amazon and Barnes & Noble sell the ebook version for $5.99…but I have a Kobo. Kobo sells the ebook for $7.99. That made my itchy “buy” fingers slow down. I simply was not going to spend $2 for the privilege of buying the book from Kobo and I almost always compare prices. When you have a book buying habit like mine every penny counts. So I eyed the MMPB a few times. B&N was selling it for $7.99 but Amazon was selling it for $7.19. I stared at it a few times but didn’t buy – I wanted the ebook. Then I saw that Amazon dropped their MMPB price from $7.19 to $6.64. I bought it right away. I have no problem paying more for a paper version but I wasn’t paying $2 more for the ebook just because I own a Kobo and not a Kindle or a nook.

Anyway.

I loved this book! I’ve had a pretty good case of the cranky book fussies lately. Very little has really caught my attention long enough for me to complete a book. It’s been driving me a bit batty, lol. I finally had a chance to crack open It Happened One Wedding on a recent flight and I became seriously annoyed when people (including the suddenly talkative hubby) kept interrupting me. Yaaaay! I love a good read!

Review: Bad Girl Good by Sadey Quinn

bad girl good

Chloe is a pretty brunette with a lot of spunk and not a whole lot of sense. After she experiences yet another failed relationship with a good guy, her long-time friend Todd enters the picture with romantic interest.

But being with Todd carries some weight. Instead of dealing with her behavior passive aggressively, like the other guys, Todd wants to spank her when she screws up. Can she submit to a guy who won’t put up with her when she’s bad?

“Bad Girl Good” is erotic romance, with sex, spankings, humiliation, and anal play. This novella is meant for an adult audience only.

I have some conflicting feelings about this book and it’s characters. There are a few things that I wasn’t in love with but this is still a pretty good read. It’s a relatively short read and it’s sexy. Chloe is a sweet girl who is a good friend and the backstory of her and her friends’ lives felt honest.

I really didn’t care too much for Todd at the start of the book, especially the first time Todd is on page with Chloe – the “meet-cute” if you prefer. Prior to and when Todd and Chloe first start to date, he lectures her often on how irresponsible she is, nagging her about how she is a “train-wreck.” Even if this was true…I just don’t know how well I could have taken that line of conversation. Maybe it’s pride, I don’t know. I *think* that it is…I feel that a conversation like that can be started by a family member, by a significant other, by a very good friend. But not by a potential lover, you know?
