Mastered Anthology Review: His Secret by Portia Da Costa

Mastered: 10 Tales of Sensual Surrender

Photobucket
Note: This story has also been published under the title The Retreat.

Ben Chambers is the perfect boyfriend, the perfect lover, the perfect man. Sarah adores him, but she knows that despite the deliciousness of their lovemaking, their shared interests, and the fun they have together, there’s a certain special something missing in their relationship. And then, arriving for a hedonistic weekend of luxury at an English country house hotel, something happens that changes everything between them. A momentary, inconsequential pat on the bottom opens the door to a breathtaking world of daring and transgressive sexual pleasure…and forges a bond that’s both profoundly physical and a melding of their souls.

This was a cute and quick story – very short but extremely cute. I’ve read it previously as The Retreat and it was nice to re-read. Not too much to say about this one, to be honest – it’s a spanking (only) super short.

My favorite part of this story was the fact that it was obvious that Ben truly loves Sarah: he tells her that he wants to be with her even if she will not indulge him in his kinks. That’s love, folks. And even sweeter that she loves him (and his kinks), too.

Mastered Anthology Review: The Scientific Method (Vampire Queen #9.5) by Joey W. Hill

Mastered: 10 Tales of Sensual Surrender

Mastering her body was easy. Mastering her heart and soul will be an erotic science…
In the vampire-servant relationship, the vampire holds all the power. Being Lord Brian’s research assistant as well as his servant, Debra accepts that, but she craves her Master’s heart. When Brian notices his servant’s unhappiness, he uses methods they both understand to prove just what belonging to him fully means.

I’ve read two books by Joey W. Hill in the past. Those two books were so well written and so full of emotion that I was a sobbing, snotty, red-faced mess by the time I reached the end. I’m talking the ugly cry. So it made me a little gun shy and I’ve avoided more of her books. When I saw the Mastered anthology I bought it on the strength of Joey W. Hill’s name alone. It’s just a vampire story I told myself. It’s inside an anthology so it has to be short, I thought. I’ll be fine.

Ugly. Cry. UGLY.

OMG. I should have known that there is no such thing as “just a story” when it comes to Joey W. Hill. My cousin called me when I was smack in the middle of The Scientific Method. She thought I was sick or sleep cause my voice was hoarse and I was congested from all the tears. O_O She says to me, “Are you going to finish that book??” YES. Yes, I will. I will sit here and cry till its over!

Review: Bad Girl Good by Sadey Quinn

bad girl good

Chloe is a pretty brunette with a lot of spunk and not a whole lot of sense. After she experiences yet another failed relationship with a good guy, her long-time friend Todd enters the picture with romantic interest.

But being with Todd carries some weight. Instead of dealing with her behavior passive aggressively, like the other guys, Todd wants to spank her when she screws up. Can she submit to a guy who won’t put up with her when she’s bad?

“Bad Girl Good” is erotic romance, with sex, spankings, humiliation, and anal play. This novella is meant for an adult audience only.

I have some conflicting feelings about this book and it’s characters. There are a few things that I wasn’t in love with but this is still a pretty good read. It’s a relatively short read and it’s sexy. Chloe is a sweet girl who is a good friend and the backstory of her and her friends’ lives felt honest.

I really didn’t care too much for Todd at the start of the book, especially the first time Todd is on page with Chloe – the “meet-cute” if you prefer. Prior to and when Todd and Chloe first start to date, he lectures her often on how irresponsible she is, nagging her about how she is a “train-wreck.” Even if this was true…I just don’t know how well I could have taken that line of conversation. Maybe it’s pride, I don’t know. I *think* that it is…I feel that a conversation like that can be started by a family member, by a significant other, by a very good friend. But not by a potential lover, you know?

Review: Safe in His Arms by Renee Rose

safe in his arms

Photobucket
For as long as she could remember, Becca dreamed of a dominant man to take her in hand, and Zac, the handsome Marine she met at her sister’s wedding, filled the role with aplomb… for a weekend. Then the fling came to an end, Zac went off to war and died for his country, and Becca learned she carried a child who would be born without a father.

Seven years later, Becca has done her best to move on and forget about Zac… until the day she walks into her kitchen to find the man she believed she would never see again locked in mortal combat with her son’s nanny, and realizes everything she thought she knew about Zac was a lie.

Like all Black Ops agents, Zac doesn’t exist in any government record. His life is a series of deadly missions, and relationships of any kind are unsanctioned. But he keeps one secret. He watches over Becca, the beautiful daughter of a rogue agent, and Parker, the six-year-old boy he fathered that fateful weekend. When he spots a known assassin in their apartment posing as a nanny, he’s forced to reveal himself and take them to safety… whether Becca likes it or not.

While Becca may have enjoyed his dominance once, bending her to his will again may not be quite so easy. He is determined to keep her safe, however, and if a long, hard spanking is required, he is more than willing to oblige. Having Becca over his knee rekindles more than his passion, though; even when the immediate danger has passed, he finds it much more difficult to “ghost out” on his family again. Must he resign himself to protecting those he loves from afar, or can he find a way to be the man Becca needs and longs for, the man who is worthy of her submission and her love?

Publisher’s Note: Safe in His Arms is an erotic romance novel that includes both consensual and non-consensual spankings, anal play, graphic sexual scenes, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

This is short story/novella length. I find reading and reviewing shorts/novellas to always be rather challenging – so I can only imagine that writing them must be just as challenging. There’s a lot of information that needs to be condensed down to its purest version to be able to fit into the required word count.

And that is the exact same reason why I find reading shorts to be challenging – I want so much (from the book, the author, the characters, the plot) but there’s so little space available. *sigh* One of the biggest issues I normally have with shorts is the relationship of the characters themselves (not the relationship the characters have with the reader). How do you convey the appropriate amount of tension and intimacy while not writing a full length novel? The mind, it boggles.

Maintenance Night by Trent Evans

maintenance night

“Maintenance Night.” The very words make a submissive woman shudder in dread – and anticipation.

Lacey has always been just such a woman, and now she’s also a spanked wife, subject to her dominant husband’s rules, his discipline, and most of all, his desires.

She loves Troy with every atom of her being, and can’t get enough of him. But if that’s the case, why does she persist in disobeying him? For a loving couple in a serious D/s marriage, disobedience has its punishments – and its rewards.

And it’s on Maintenance Night that her husband decides to take Lacey’s submission to a deeper, even more intimate level.

Warning – this BDSM short novella features the following themes: spanking, caning, Dominance/submission (M/F), sadomasochism, bondage, explicit sex (including anal), a Dom who loves his wife, and a sweet, but disobedient sub who might be in over her head.

This book…

…it’s hot but it made me think: Are there ways you can change your mate that are irreversible?

The heroine, Lacey, is a pain slut. After marrying, she cautiously (expecting rejection) tells her husband that she is interested in Domestic Discipline and wanted to be spanked until she cried.

Fortunately (or unfortunately), her husband jumps right in, feet first.

The Unrequited Dom by Carolyn Faulkner

It wasn’t supposed to be like this between them. She knew it was wrong, but it was so very, very right at the same time.

Technically, Eden “Sugar” Maillheux had been Cash Daughtrey’s step-sister for more than a decade now, but she’d never felt sisterly towards him in the least, and, aside from the fact that he took to disciplining and controlling her very, very strictly – once she became an adult – it definitely wasn’t brotherly love that was radiating hotly from his side of the desk he bent her over so often, either.

Cash’s brand of lovingly strict discipline naturally developed into something more – much more between them – wildly hot lovemaking that took her breath away every time she thought of it, and kept her coming back for more through out her college years.

Yet it wasn’t quite enough to ease her mind about the rightness of those deep, dark desires, and she moved away, taking his heart with him.

But he ruthlessly used the only means that presented itself a few years later to get her back on his land, knowing he would never again let her go.

3 stars with major reservations

I’m starting to think that Carolyn Faulkner is the Queen of Great Blurbs…because this is the 3rd book of hers that I’ve read that sucked me in via the blurb. She should give lessons, lol. I’m not sure how this keeps happening.

I have to say…I liked this one a lot better than the first one (Kept) but just as the last one (Skye’s Submission) this one has some glaring problems.

Skye’s Submission by Carolyn Faulkner

skyes submission

Skye Sommers had come to Rourke Danville beaten but not broken, and he had stepped up and rescued her – a complete stranger to him. He’d rented one of his houses, on his own land, to her and then, when the situation between herself and her attacker had become heated, he’d not so much as batted an eye at opening his own house to her. In fact, it had been much more like he hadn’t given her a choice about whether or not she was going to come to stay with him, because he’d already begun putting his size 13 triple E’s down, or rather his triple extra large palm down on her bottom when he deemed it necessary to gain her cooperation in any given matter, or to correct what he considered to be disobedient behavior – which seemed to be anything that disagreed with him. And he certainly wasn’t going to hesitate to do so when it was a matter of her personal safety. Quite the contrary.

She nearly snorted as she remembered that he’d threatened to spank her within about five minutes of having met her, which almost had her running screaming in the opposite direction. And now, here she was, long after the event that had freed her from having to worry about Mark Mercer for several decades as he languished in jail, waiting for the first stroke of that wicked looking quirt of his to fall.

This book was originally published on Spanking Romance as “Skyes Submission, Book One”, “Skye’s Submission, Book Two”, and “Skye’s Submission, Book Three: The Wedding”.

I’m rather sad about this book. It had a lot more promise that it delivered.

Rating: I started with 5 stars for this book but a humongous editing error required an automatic 1 star deduction. The highest rating I could give this book was 4 stars.

So, to start with the auto-deduction: As an FYI, I’m no grammar/editing freak. If I notice it…it’s a huge freaking glowing-neon error.
