Under Her Skin by Jeaniene Frost, Meljean Brook & Ilona Andrews

under her skin

Three short stories of paranormal romance…

“Pack” brings you a tale of a lost hiker and her encounter with some very frightening–and sexy–wolves. A female werewolf helps a sheriff track down a killer “In Sheep’s Clothing.” A woman must repay her family’s debt to a shapeshifting magician in “Grace of Small Magics.”

Please note: Each of these stories previously appeared in print in The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance. This is a collected e-book edition of Ilona Andrews’, Jeaniene Frost’s, and Meljean Brook’s contributions.

Pack by Jeaniene Frost: I both liked and didn’t like this one. My major problem? I don’t like deception in books. It…just makes me uncomfortable most of the time. Unless the person being deceived is the bad guy. The people the heroine tries to deceive and who are keeping her captive are really doing it for her own good (so she won’t hurt someone she loves in error) and they punished the ones who harmed her. So, I totally understand why the heroine tries to deceive the people she’s around – she is captive and turned were against her will – but I still don’t like it. Even though this is the first story in the anthology – I DNF’d it near the end – not because of poor writing but due to personal quirks: deception and nerves.

In Sheep’s Clothing by Meljean Brook: Cute but forgettable. Totally forgettable.

Grace of Small Magics by Ilona Andrews: In true Ilona Andrews style, this short story is jam packed with a ton of action and emotion. This was a great story…my problem with it was that it was too short. The Andrews write in a very specific style that usually includes hardcore action, family background/emotional issues and romance. All of this was bottled up and shoved into a short story format. It didn’t really work for me this time. I wanted the story to be longer to give more development into the relationship that occurs…and that time was not present. All in all, it was the best story in the anthology and I still recommend it. I think that if you are new* to the Andrews, this isn’t a bad start.

Just as a small FYI…I hate all of you who have yet to discover the joy of reading Ilona Andrews for the first time. The jealously I have towards those who get to read it for the first time is…immense, lol.
